---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- January 27, 2003 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Senator Philip Erdman, of Bayard, has introduced Legislative Bill 534, which would permit homeschoolers and other non-accredited private school students to participate in sports, classes, and other activities at the public schools. This bill was written by a friend of home education who wants to provide more choices for Nebraska students. While not all homeschoolers want to participate in the public schools, most homeschoolers would agree that this is a positive development. ACTION REQUESTED 1. Read LB 534: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?ID=648 . Please consider whether this is something that would benefit your family or other homeschoolers you know. 2. If you believe this legislation would be good for your family or other homeschoolers, please contact your state senator. If you don't know who your state senator is you can look it up in HSLDA's legislative toolbox, www.hslda.org/toolbox 3. Please forward this e-mail to other homeschoolers and families who have children in unaccredited private schools. Your help in getting the word out will make it possible for them to be effective citizens. BACKGROUND The Nebraska Constitution says, "The Legislature shall provide for the free instruction in the common schools of this state of all persons between the age of five and twenty-one years." (Nebraska Constitution Article VII, Section 1.) LB 534 would fulfill this constitutional requirement by allowing "all persons between the ages of five and twenty-one years" to receive free instruction in the common schools, not just those children who are enrolled as fulltime public school students. Since the state constitution already guarantees this right, it is only appropriate for the legislature to implement it in a statute. Very truly yours, Scott W.
