---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ----------------------------------------------------------------------
January 28, 2003
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,
All across the country, homeschoolers are finding their legislatures considering bills that would take away homeschool freedoms. Louisiana, by contrast, has learned that a serious threat to home education has been averted.
On August 13, 2002, three Louisiana legislators wrote to Cecil Picard, Superintendent of the Louisiana Department of Education to say, "We are interested in filing bills for the 2003 regular session to tighten up on the requirements for home study and home schooling." Louisiana homeschoolers had several months to get organized to block this legislation.
On January 22, 2003, Butch Gautreaux, State Senator for District 21, wrote one HSLDA member family to say, "Thank you for your correspondence concerning home-school legislation. After reviewing the statistics for the State and the positive results from home schooling, we found that no legislation was needed and the pending legislation has been withdrawn."
By sticking together and working hard, homeschoolers have been able to preserve the blessings of liberty for themselves and their posterity despite this legislative challenge. Homeschoolers across America salute those in Louisiana for their dedication to freedom.
Very truly yours,
Scott W. Somerville HSLDA Staff Attorney
