---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- January 24, 2003 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, More developments in Texas... LEGISLATION Home School Legal Defense Association continues to monitor the Mandatory Kindergarten bill, S.B. 30. This will lower compulsory attendance from six years old to five. At the present, we believe that the budget shortfall in Texas will work in our favor to ensure that this bill is killed in committee. HSLDA Legislative Counsel has been working to make sure that this bill does not go anywhere. Another bill has been introduced which is favorable to parent's rights. H.B. 374, introduced by Representative Dutton, states: "A parent may use corporal punishment for the reasonable discipline of the parent's child." Representative Dutton would like to add the language to the child welfare code. We believe this is a positive advancement of parent's rights, affirming the right of parents to perform Biblical discipline. SIMMONS CASE DROPPED In Rosharon, the Simmons family (name changed to protect the family's privacy) was faced with a judgment of the court requiring them to use an accredited curriculum to homeschool their teenage son. If they did not produce an accredited curriculum by January 24, the justice of the peace was going to pursue further sanctions against the family. Attorney Tom Sanders represented the family in court and was able to convince the judge to drop his requirement that the curriculum be accredited. The family has obtained a regular homeschool curriculum and is now free to teach their teenage son at home. We are thankful for the outcome of this case. Watch for next week's Texas Weekly Update to read about further progress on these and other items, including the child welfare initiative. Thank you for standing with us for family and freedom in Texas. Sincerely, Christopher J.
