Maine--Update: MPA Memo Not Withdrawn

----------------------------------------------------------------------
From the HSLDA E-lert Service...
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,

On December 9 I had a lengthy conversation with Dick Durost,
executive director of the Maine Principal's Association. I requested
that he withdraw his memo of November 26, or at least hold it in
abeyance until the issue could be studied more carefully. He was
courteous, but declined my requests.

In a fax I received today, Mr. Durost's attorney confirmed that a
homeschooled student cannot play on any private school team without
jeopardizing the team's eligibility.

We are now considering correcting this inequity through litigation or
legislation.

In Maine, homeschoolers are allowed to play on public school sports
teams. There is no compelling reason why they should be permitted to
play on a public school teams, but forbidden from playing on a
private school teams. Furthermore, many parents have religious
objections to allowing their children to participate in any public
school program. For these parents, their children are effectively
locked out of both public school sports and private school sports.

We will contact you again when we have decided what our next step
should be.

Sincerely yours,

Scott A. Woodruff
HSLDA Staff Attorney
