---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- December 6, 2002 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, After many years of smooth relationships between the homeschool community and the high school sports community, a memo from Dick Durost, Executive Director of the Maine Principal's Association (MPA), has caused great distress. The November 26, 2002, memo outlined severe restrictions on the ability of Chapter 130 homeschoolers, as well as homeschoolers enrolled in non-approved private schools, to participate on the sports teams of private schools. We believe the MPA may have failed to follow its own rules. We believe important constitutional and statutory guarantees may also have been violated. We have made numerous phone calls to Mr. Durost over the past week but have not gotten through. We intend to contact him early next week and ask him to withdraw his memo. Although he is executive director of the MPA, there is no indication that the association itself approved of the memo. If we are unable to resolve this with negotiations, we will support efforts to change the law and may also consider litigation under appropriate circumstances. If you are a member of HSLDA and believe that your student's ability to participate on a private school team is in jeopardy, please contact us. If we are able to resolve this through negotiation, we will let you know as soon as possible. Sincerely yours, Scott Woodruff HSLDA Staff Attorney {{JoinAd}} ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The HSLDA E-lert Service is a service of: Home School Legal Defense Association P.O.
