No legislation was introduced to change any laws affecting private
"home schooling" during the 2001-2002 legislative session.

2. Update on Education Savings Accounts Vote

The U.S. House of Representatives considered the Education Savings
and School Excellence Performance Act of 2002 on September 4, 2002.
Unfortunately, the bill failed to receive the needed a 2/3 super
majority to pass.

3. Home School Tax Deduction Passes House Committee

Today, September 5, 2002, the United States House of Representatives
Committee on Ways and Means passed by a vote of 22-14 the Back to
School Tax Relief Act of 2002 (H.R. 5193).

4. Minnesota Homeschool Data is "Public"

While no one apparently wants to release homeschool information,
there does appear to be a significant loophole in existing law that
allows it.

5. Fixing FERPA: Protect Homeschooler's Privacy

Congressman Mark Kennedy last week introduced H.R 5331, a bill to
make a much needed change to the federal Family Educational Records
Privacy Act.

6. Montana Senator Requests State Testing of Home Schoolers

On June 20, 2002, Senator Don Ryan submitted a formal request to the
Montana Legislature for the drafting of a bill to require home school
students to be tested annually with the same state assessment used in
public schools.

7. Home School Heartbeat: HSLDA Case Updates

Though home schooling is legal in all fifty states, individual school
districts continue to cause problems for home schooling families.

8. Riverside Reverses New ITBS Testing Standards for Homeschoolers

On September 5, 2002, Riverside Publishing announced a complete
reversal of their restrictive policy for homeschool students taking
the Iowa Test of Basic Skills.
