---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, In 1997, HSLDA filed a suit on behalf of member families in Monrovia, California, challenging the city's daytime curfew. The case is now before the California Court of Appeals for the second time. (For more details about the history of the case, visit our website at http://www.hslda.org/legal/state/ca/19970428Harrahill/default.asp). Oral arguments have been set for September 11, 2002, at 1:00 p.m. If you would like to attend, the hearing will be at the Court of Appeals for the Second Appellate District, located at 300 South Spring Street, Los Angeles. The courtroom is on the third floor. Seating is limited. The ordinance prohibits school-age children from being in public places during public-school hours. The home schooling families of Monrovia object to the ordinance because it subjects their children to being stopped by the police--and possibly cited--even though they are not required to be in public school. The daytime curfew ordinance in Monrovia has served as a model for ordinances in numerous other California cities. The outcome of this case will affect the entire state of California.
