---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, We need your help. The United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee was scheduled to meet last Thursday, July 18, 2002, to consider a vote on the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). This meeting was cancelled due to the amount of controversy generated by phone calls from concerned families like you. After the committee meeting was officially cancelled, Chairman Joseph Biden (D-DE) and Senator Barbara Boxer (D CA) made a point of speaking to the large crowd that had assembled outside the hearing room. Those gathered were mostly supporters of CEDAW and there were very few opponents in attendance. Chairman Biden rescheduled a vote in committee for Thursday, July 25, 2002. It is critical to have people who oppose CEDAW attend the new hearing. Your presence indicates to the senators that there are many families opposing this dangerous treaty. It gives us an opportunity to discuss this important issue with Capitol Hill staffers and Washington advocacy groups as well. We are hoping to have a press conference on Thursday in opposition to CEDAW, at which we could also use your enthusiastic participation. ACTION REQUESTED Please attend the hearing at 419 Dirksen Senate Office Building (near the Capitol). The hearing starts at 10:30 a.m. Please plan to meet at the hearing room by 9:45 a.m., or earlier, to insure you obtain a seat. Hearing rooms often fill up quickly. We will contact you soon about a possible press conference that would coincide with the CEDAW hearing. The press conference will likely be scheduled before the hearing begins. If you will be able to attend, please RSVP to Sam Redfern at samuel@hslda.org so we have information and materials available for you. For background information on CEDAW visit http://www.hslda.org/docs/nche/issues/U/UN_Women.asp . Thank you for your work to protect liberty. Sincerely, Tom Washburne Director, National Center for Home Education {{JoinAd}} ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The HSLDA E-lert Service is a service of: Home School Legal Defense Association P.O.
