---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, It has come to our attention that school districts in Minnesota are releasing home school records to third parties. Many districts believe they are required to do this, in light of Advisory Opinion #00-052, which classifies home school records as "government data" and must be released upon request. We are modifying the sample forms on our website to explicitly preserve the privacy of each member family. We encourage you to use the Home School Legal Defense Association forms when you submit your "Non-Public Education Compulsory Instruction Report" form by October 1st. HSLDA, the Minnesota Association of Christian Home Educators, and the Minnesota Homeschooler's Alliance have all agreed to press this matter with the local school districts and with the Department of Children, Families, and Learning. Your superintendent may promptly provide you with a letter explaining your district's privacy policy. If your superintendent does not provide you with such a letter by August 10, please call your school administrative offices and ask them whether your home school records are private. If your district does not protect your privacy, please let us know. To read Advisory Opinion #00-052 visit: http://www.ipad.state.mn.us/opinions/2000/00052.html To read my letter to Minnesota school district superintendents visit: http://www.hslda.org/hs/state/MN/200207090.asp We are reasonably confident that home school records can and will be protected. We appreciate your vigilance as we work together to preserve our freedoms. Very truly yours, Scott W.
