---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- May 30, 2002 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Thank you for all your calls on Senate Bill 958 the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). While your efforts had a positive impact, the legislation did not pass this year. The Missouri Senate recently passed S.B. 958, sending it over to the House. The bill ended up in the House Judiciary Committee where the chairman conducted a hearing but planned no further action. On May 10, we asked you to call the House Judiciary Committee and the House members to encourage them to support S.B. 958. We believe those calls helped the efforts of the pro-religious freedom legislators to get an agreement worked out that would have resulted in final passage of the RFRA. House Judiciary Chairman Ralph Monaco tentatively decided to attach the Religious Freedom Restoration Act as an amendment to his Court Procedure bill (House Bill 1962). This bill did pass, but without our amendment. This would have assured passage had Rep. Monaco followed through with his agreement.
