|
---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- May 15, 2002 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, Thank you for all your calls for Senate Bill 958! Your efforts have had an impact on the House Judiciary Chairman Ralph Monaco. The Senate recently passed a Religious Freedom Restoration Act, S.B. 958, sending it over to the House. The bill ended up in the House Judiciary Committee where the chairman conducted a hearing but planned no further action. On May 10, we asked you to call the House Judiciary Committee and the House members to encourage them to support S.B. 958. We believe those calls helped the efforts of the pro religious freedom legislators to get a deal worked out that may result in final passage of the Religious Freedom Act. Rep. Monaco has tentatively agreed to attach the Religious Freedom Act as an amendment to his Court Procedure bill (House Bill 1962). He plans to make a motion in the House to vote on H.B. 1962 and its amendments without going to conference committee. This will assure passage IF Representative Monaco follows through with his agreement. We need to move quickly to show our support for this action and encourage Rep. Monaco to go forward. Therefore we are asking you to take the following steps. REQUESTED ACTION (You do not need to identify yourself as a home schooler for these calls.) Immediately call the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Ralph Monaco at 573-751-9851 and give him the following message: "We were pleased to hear that you are planning to attach Senator Ted House's Religious Freedom Act amendment to H.B. 1962. We support this action and look forward to your motion to bypass the conference committee and bring H.B. 1962 with its religious freedom amendment to a floor vote. Religious freedom is one of our most precious rights and it must be protected." Rep. Monaco needs to know many people know about the tentative agreement and expect him to deliver. Please call right away since the legislative session will be over this Friday. BACKGROUND Review our last e-mail to find out the reasons the Missouri Religious Freedom Act is so crucial. http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?ID=430 Please contact Chairman Monaco's office now. Also pray God blesses these last few days of the session with a victory for religious freedom in Missouri.
