---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- April 23, 2002 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, House Committee action on H. 703 will come to a climax tomorrow (4/24/2002) at a meeting scheduled for 9:00 AM. This bill would prevent the Commissioner of Education from delaying home school enrollments, which has brought needless anxiety and tremendous legal uncertainty to many. The bill would also give home school families the dignity of a presumption that they are innocent. The public hearing on April 17 was tremendously positive in every respect--except that the committee took no action. Tomorrow the committee is expected to either leave the bill "tabled," in which case it will be dead for the year, or bring it to a committee vote. A favorable committee vote would then allow the bill to go to the house floor for action. ACTION REQUESTED Please let your voice be heard! We need a final push to get this bill out of committee and on to the floor of the House of Representatives. If you have not previously told the members of the Committee your opinion, there is still a small window of opportunity. You can call 802-828-2228 today or very early tomorrow. Your message can be as simple as, "Please pass draft 1 of H. 703. It will prevent needless delay and anxiety and help protect families who home school." The committee will meet in Room 45 in the statehouse. We do not expect the committee to open the meeting for public testimony, but we encourage all who wish to come and fill the room as a show of your support. Room 45 is much smaller than the room in which the public hearing was held. CONTACT INFORMATION Call 802-828-2228 to leave a message for a representative.
