---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- April 17, 2002 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, There was standing room only in the 80-seat Vermont House conference room when last night's public hearing on House Bill 703 began. For the next two hours, parent after parent spoke clearly, passionately, and convincingly in support of draft one on four major themes: 1) The need for immediate enrollment, 2) the need to presume families are in compliance with the law rather than presuming they are in violation, 3) opposition to any form of home school advisory commission, and 4) the need to defend parental control of their children's education. Although there was not a single hand or voice raised in support of any other draft, the representatives were noncommittal. There was, however, a report that the testimony may have swayed two representatives in home schooler's favor. Chairman Howard Crawford said the committee would meet later and decide what action, if any, to take. HSLDA extends our deepest thanks go to everyone who came to the hearing. ACTION REQUESTED Has the committee heard your opinion yet? If not, there is still time for you to influence the committee's decision.
