---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- April 15, 2002 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, HSLDA is very pleased to report that on April 15, 2002, the Kentucky Legislature adjourned without ever having considered either House Bill 54 or House Bill 725 in committee. The legislature is now in recess so we can finally announce that these bills have been defeated. HSLDA firmly opposed both bills because they singled out home school families for discriminatory treatment. (For more information on these bills, visit our web site at http://www.hslda.org/hs/state/KY/default.asp.) Thanks to the determined opposition of hundreds of home schoolers and concerned residents across Kentucky, H.B. 54 and H.B. 725 will be laid to rest. Your phone calls and letters had a great impact, and hopefully will remain in the memory of Kentucky representatives for years to come. The 2003 session will be short, and although these bills may be reintroduced, we do not expect them to be a problem next year. However, HSLDA anticipates the issues in House Bills 54 and 725 may be a significant part of the regular legislative session in 2004. Home school advocates can begin preparing even now by developing contacts with state senators and representatives. Demonstrating the positive purpose and effects of home schooling will instill in your representatives a more accurate perspective, and him to better represent the interests of freedom. Very truly yours, Scott W. Somerville, Esq.
