|
---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- April 11, 2002 Dear HSLDA Members and Friends, As of this morning (on 04/11/02), H.B. 1460 is number FOUR on the list of bills ready for "perfection," or final disposition in the House. If the three bills ahead of it are disposed of today, H.B. 1460 could be amended or voted on by the entire house. H.B.1460 would allow metropolitan school districts to raise the age of compulsory school attendance from 16 to 17 years of age, thus taking away the freedom of parents to decide for themselves whether their 16 year old should continue formal education. ACTION REQUESTED If you have not contacted your Missouri state representative yet, please do so right away. Your message may be as simple as, "Please vote against H.B. 1460. It takes away a parent's freedom to decide what is best for their 16 year old. It will force disruptive young adults back into a classroom where they do not want to be, making it harder for students who truly do want to learn and raising the cost of school security." Remember to be courteous. Since this bill affects all parents regardless of how they educate their children, it is not necessary to introduce yourself as a home schooler when you call. If the issue of home schooling does come up, our last two elerts explain part of the negative impact this bill would have on home schoolers.
