---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- April 2, 2002 Dear Vermont Members and Friends, The Vermont House Education Committee is scheduled to discuss House Bill 703 on Thursday April 4 at 1:30 pm. ACTION REQUESTED You can make a great impact for freedom in the following ways: 1. HSLDA joins with the Vermont Association of Home Educators and The Christian Home Educators of Vermont in urging your attendance at the House Education Committee meeting on Thursday. Pass the word to every home schooler you know and plan to bring your well-behaved children. 2. Contact your representative and let him know you will be coming to the statehouse on Thursday. Ask if you can personally meet with him and explain the importance of this measure. His help is essential to gain passage of H.B. 703. A complete list of the members of the House of Representatives can be found at: http://www.leg.state.vt.us/legdir/districts.cfm?Body=H 3. Continue to call the committee members, especially if one of them is your representative. Please call and let your voice be heard. When you call, give this message: "Please vote H.B. 703 out of committee without any restrictive amendments. Please put the wishes of the people above the wishes of the bureaucrats. H.B. 703 solves a current problem that subjects innocent families to the threat of prosecution. Please support this improvement to Vermont's home study law." You can leave a message for your representative by calling 802-828- 2231. If you don't know who your representative is, you can find out by using HSLDA's "Legislative Toolbox" at: http://www.hslda.org/toolbox. Contact information for the committee members is listed below. Willard St. Burlington, VT 05401 UPDATE Some committee members are proposing their own amendment to H.B. 703 to counter home schoolers' efforts. It is reported that there is another attempt to create a Home Study Advisory Council such as the DOE proposed back in November. (See: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?ID=380.) There is also talk of instituting a three-year enrollment plan based upon agreement to use some "recognized curriculum." HSLDA opposes all of these proposals. The committee must pass H.B. 703 without any restrictive amendments. Some committee members are discounting their accountability to home schooler's calls because they believe they are only hearing from a portion of the home schooling community. They need to hear from everyone! BACKGROUND For more information on H.B. 703, see the following page on our website: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?ID=381. CONCLUSION Home schoolers have no one to champion our cause in Montpelier other than ourselves. Therefore, every home schooler's participation in this effort is vital. The opportunity for change is rarely convenient and is often hard to obtain. We have such an opportunity now. The degree to which home schoolers unite will define whether this bill results in greater freedom or more restriction for home schoolers. Thank you for standing with us for freedom.
