---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- March 22, 2002 Dear Vermont Members and Friends, The Vermont House Education Committee held a hearing on House Bill (H.B.) 703 yesterday. At the hearing, testimony in favor of the measure was received from several persons including Vermont Association of Home Educators Board Member Tim Terhune. At this point, because the committee is reluctant to take action on H.B. 703, calls and visits are urgently needed. ACTION REQUESTED 1. The committee members need to hear from their constituents regarding this bill. At the hearing yesterday, one committee member asked why he wasn't receiving calls and visits from home schoolers. Now is the time for us to make an impact! Below are the phone numbers and addresses of the committee members. Please call and let your voice be heard. You can leave a message for your representative by calling 802-828-2231. If you don't know who your representative is, you can find out by using HSLDA's "Legislative Toolbox" at: http://www.hslda.org/toolbox. When you call, give your representative this message: "Please vote H.B. 703 out of committee without any of the department of education amendments. Please put the wishes of the people above the wishes of the bureaucrats. H.B. 703 solves a current problem that subjects innocent families to the threat of prosecution. Please support this improvement to Vermont's home study law." When you call, also request the committee to hold a public hearing on H.B. 703 where home schoolers can attend and voice their opinion. 2. If possible, try to meet personally with your representative over this weekend, especially if he is on the House Education Committee.
