---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- March 14, 2002 Dear Wisconsin Members and Friends, Many of you may have already been contacted about completing the Wisconsin School Census. Home School Legal Defense Association would like its members to know that they are not required to participate in this voluntary school census. If you complete the census survey, the local public schools will receive funding for your children. The goal of this census is to gather data on the number of children in each school district subject to the compulsory school attendance law. The schools receive funding from the state depending on how many school-aged children are in their district. Although the stated purpose is to get a numeric count of school aged children in your home, often the actual questions on the census are more probing. The school district may also seek to gather statistics "related to the interests of education." These questions are unnecessary and many families consider them intrusive. The school board is obligated to offer this census to you. The law does not, however, mandate that you must complete the census. Our members who do not want to take part in the survey should simply tell the census worker "We decline to participate in the voluntary school census. Thank you very much." If you are a member of HSLDA, please call us if a census worker refuses to recognize your family's right not to participate. Sincerely yours, Christopher J.
