---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- March 14, 2002 Dear Florida Members and Friends, The "Government Nanny" battle continues to rage in the Florida Legislature. The "Learning Gateway" Senate bill package has now crossed back over to the House, and is again in the House Council for Lifelong Learning. We have a chance to stop Senate Bills 86 & 88, as this House Council is not in favor of the program. Thanks to an outpouring of opposition from home schoolers and other concerned parents, the House of Representatives' Council for Lifelong Learning voted to table the house version of the "Government Nanny" bill (H.B. 1435) earlier this year. However, Florida Senate Majority Leader John McKay, upset by H.B. 1435's defeat in the Florida House, rushed the Senate version of the bill through the Senate. S.B. 86 & 88 passed in the Senate on March 6 due to Senator McKay's strong support. Echoing objections expressed by grassroots opposition as well as HSLDA, the House Council for Lifelong Learning published on the Florida House website an analysis of why H.B. 1435 was voted down: "This bill is intrusive, weakens private parental decision-making, and is the antithesis of the principles of individual freedom, personal responsibility, and family empowerment." Your calls had a tremendous impact in persuading the House to kill H.B. 1435. Now we need your help to stop its sister bills, S.B. 86 and 88. For background information on these bills visit: http://www.hslda.org/legislation/state/fl/2002/FLSB88 REQUESTED ACTION: Please call your Florida state representative (not your state Senator) IMMEDIATELY and deliver this message: "Please vote against S.B. 86 & 88. This legislation creates a government program that will invade family privacy, usurp the role of parents, and waste taxpayer money. This bill is unnecessary at this time of budget shortfalls." You do not need to identify yourself as a home schooler. You can call your representative directly. If you do not know who your representative is, call your county clerk's office or use HSLDA's Legislative Toolbox at: http://www.hslda.org/toolbox. The Florida House of Representatives needs to hear your opposition to S.B. 86 & 88 until Friday, March 22--the last day of the session. At that time the bills will die if your calls have prevented them from moving. Please urge your state representative to vote against these bills. Thank you for standing with us for liberty. Sincerely, Christopher Klicka Senior Counsel {{JoinAd}} ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The HSLDA E-lert Service is a service of: Home School Legal Defense Association P.O.
