---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- February 27, 2002 Dear Vermont HSLDA Members and Friends, Negotiations on House Bill 703 are now at a critical moment. Today could be a turning point. The commissioner of education is putting up a massive fight to oppose the benefits H. 703 would bring Vermont home schoolers. Although committee members have received many phone calls from home schoolers supporting H. 703, the members seem inclined to give the wishes of the bureaucrats more weight than the wishes of the people. ACTION REQUESTED 1. If your representative is on the House Education Committee (see last e-lert) please call him or her today. Your voice must be heard above the voice of the bureaucrats. Your message may be as simple as: "Please vote H. 703 out of committee without any department of education amendments. Please put the wishes of the people above the wishes of the bureaucrats. Current law allows the commissioner of education to delay home school enrollment by up to 85 days. This puts innocent families in a situation where they could be subject to prosecution or child neglect even if they have done everything the law requires. H. 703 solves this problem by treating families as enrolled as soon as they file their notice, but still allows the commissioner to call a hearing if necessary." 2. Call the commissioner of education and politely request that he stop opposing H. 703. Your message could be as simple as: "Please stop opposing H. 703. The bill would be good for home school families and good for Vermont." 3. Please contact all the other home school families you know and pass this information on to them. We need as many home schoolers as possible making phone calls to help H. 703 CONTACT INFORMATION Commissioner of Education Raymond McNulty: 802 828-3135.
