NH H.B. 1408 Dies---Home Schoolers Breath Easier

From the HSLDA E-lert Service...

February 15, 2002

Dear New Hampshire Members and Friends,

Yesterday morning, H.B. 1408 died a quiet and swift death.

Although the House Children and Family Law Committee had previously
voted to kill the bill, the vote was not unanimous which meant that
under New Hampshire legislative rules, the bill had to go to the
House floor to be voted on separately.

Go to the floor it did, but it was a very short trip. The House took
scarcely one minute to bring the bill up on the agenda and vote it
down by voice vote. There was no discussion, not even a defense of
the bill by its sponsor.

This is a victory for common sense. Had this bill passed, New
Hampshire law could have been Balkanized, with a different truancy
ordinance in every town. (For background and previous e-lerts on H.B.

Thank you for the many phone calls you made to lawmakers. Your voice
was heard!

We especially thank New Hampshire Representative Daniel C. Itse for
working to prevent this bad bill from becoming law; Christian Home
Educators of New Hampshire and their president, James Parison, for
their work in helping defeat the bill; and Mark Dadian for supplying
helpful information to us along the way, including some of the
information used in this e-lert.

Sincerely yours,

Scott A. Woodruff, Esq.
