---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- February 8, 2002 Dear New Hampshire Members and Friends, The rights of many home schoolers could be compromised next Thursday as New Hampshire House Bill 1408 is scheduled for a floor vote. Although this bill failed to pass in the House Children and Family Law Committee on January 24, the House will still conduct a debate and vote on this harmful bill Thursday, February 14. ACTION REQUESTED: Please visit or call your representative before February 14 with the following message: "Please vote NO on H.B. 1408, concerning truancy ordinances. We are a home school family and are opposed to this bill because a) towns and cities across the state of New Hampshire may use newfound power to unnecessarily 'crack down' on home schooling families; b) towns will not be held accountable to the state and there will be confusion of the law; and c) violation of a town's truancy ordinance, no matter how trivial, could result in parents being charged with child neglect. We urge you to vote NO on H.B. 1408." You can obtain the contact information for your representative by using the legislative toolbox on Home School Legal Defense Association's website: http://capwiz.com/hslda/dbq/officials/directory/legislist.dbq?state=NH &dir=hslda&command=statedir&keycontacts=H&submit.x=18&submit.y=11 POSITION: H.B. 1408 will expose home schoolers to local city truancy ordinances, which could vary greatly from area to area. It will also allow for summons to be issued to minors between the ages of 13 and 17 to require their appearance in court. This bill could potentially give towns that think home schooling is their biggest "truancy" problem a "blank check" to harass home school families. It is imperative that we give our best effort to quash this harmful bill. Thank you for your efforts to preserve home school freedom in New Hampshire! Sincerely, Scott A.
