California District Demands Unauthorized Information ...................................................................... 1. Hawaii Elementary School Ignores Law When the Aliamanu Elementary School in Honolulu, Hawaii, requested far more than the law requires, Home School Legal Defense Association defended our member family's right to home school free from government harassment. Read more about it on our website at: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?ID=321 ...................................................................... 2. Wisconsin Connections Academy: A Trojan Horse A proposed charter school is offering home schoolers across the state a long list of "free" benefits, but participants face significant trade-offs, including a change in the status of their children from privately home schooled students to public school students. Slated for an official vote by the Appleton School Board in the next few months, Wisconsin Connections Academy (WCA) is expected to open its doors this fall. HSLDA encourages our members to carefully examine all the facts before signing up with WCA. Read more about it on our website at: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?ID=322 ...................................................................... 3. South Dakota Keeps Spanking Legal Spanking remains legal in South Dakota despite diligent efforts by those who would have turned reasonable disciplinary action into felony child abuse. Read more about it on our website at: http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?ID=323 ...................................................................... 4. California District Demands Unauthorized Information A Chino Valley District official's letter to home schoolers overstepped the law, demanding "proof" of parents' teaching credentials and suggesting that "smaller" schools might be operating illegally. HSLDA wrote the district, explaining that California law does not require this information, nor does it make any distinction between private schools based on size. To date, the families have not heard back from the district.
