---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- February 4, 2002 Dear Virginia Members and Friends, This morning, Home School Legal Defense Association Attorney Scott Woodruff testified against Virginia House Bill 663 at a House Education Committee hearing. The committee voted nearly unanimously to "pass by" the bill indefinitely, meaning no further action will be taken on the bill this year. It is essentially dead. Under H.B. 663, home schooled students would have been prohibited from getting a college degree from a state college unless they had taken and passed the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) test. This would have been a devastating blow for many home schooling families. Sponsored by Delegate Benny Keister (District 6, D), this bill would also have prohibited private school and out-of-state students from getting a degree unless they had first taken and passed the SOL test. There were six co-sponsors of this bill along with Keister: Barlow (District 64, D), Baskerville (District 71, D), Brink (District 48, D), Moran (District 46, D), Pollard (District 99, D), and Watts (District 39, D). Thank you for your phone calls! Your voice was heard! Even Delegate Keister, the lone defiant vote in favor of the bill, commented at the hearing today that he received "many" phone calls. It was reported that some offices received as many as 200 phone calls. From the very beginning of the hearing, there was obviously very little enthusiasm for this bill.
