---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- February 1, 2002 Dear Military Members and Friends, We are pleased to report that the attempt by the military to regulate home schoolers is dead at this time. At an October 2001 meeting to discuss home schoolers' concerns, Pentagon officials assured White House counsel that the subject of regulating home schoolers in the military was "indefinitely tabled" and would not be revisited. As we reported in an e-lert last July, Home School Legal Defense Association had been working with Congress since January 2001 to slow down considerably the U.S. military's attempt to regulate home schoolers. At that time, we had discovered that an assistant secretary of defense was still trying to determine whether there was a need to alter the military policy regarding home schooling. HSLDA's legal staff then worked directly with the White House and the vice president's office to end these efforts. This led to the scheduling of October's meeting, at which the military finally gave the assurance home schoolers wanted. In addition, White House staff have promised us they will watch this issue closely to make certain it is not resurrected in the future. Sincerely, Christopher J.
