1. Illinois Family Protected from Prosecution

In December, HSLDA reported on efforts to help a member family in
Illinois who were facing a truant officer. Despite our letter on
behalf of the family, DeKalb County refused to drop the issue and
even threatened prosecution. However, after HSLDA spoke with the
regional superintendent, the matter was finally resolved.

2. Colorado District's "Payoff" of Home Schoolers Fails

State officials are examining the legality of one district's scheme
to generate extra funds by temporarily enrolling home schooled
children in public school.

3. Alaska Charter School "Benefits" May Have Strings Attached

Proposed state regulations are proving true the arguments that
government strings are always attached to government benefits, and
that home schooling families who accept government money may face
significant new restrictions.

4. Virginia Home Schooler Wins Battle to Join the Army

Although officials questioned the "accreditation" of a Virginia home
school graduate's diploma and tried to demand "proof" of his home
education program beyond what the law required, he was finally
allowed to enlist in the United States Army after HSLDA intervened on
his behalf.
