When a Nevada school district refused to provide a letter confirming a home schooling member family's compliance with the law, the mere mention of HSLDA was sufficient to break the logjam. It's amazing what just the threat of a letter from a lawyer can do.

The new year brings the opening of most states' legislative sessions. Working with state home school leaders and family-friendly legislators and using a state-by-state computerized tracking service, HSLDA monitors legislation that could affect home schoolers' rights. Already, we have seen bills introduced to regulate home schooling, raise the compulsory attendance age, and remove religious exemptions to immunization. We strive to bring you up-to-date information on these bills by e-mail and on our website.

Once again, one of the most restrictive home school laws in the country wasn't tight enough for a school district that tried to force a young boy to remain in public school until his home schooling program was "approved." When the member family contacted HSLDA, we wrote the Bethlehem area district, explaining that Pennsylvania law allows parents who have filed an affidavit to begin home schooling without waiting for public school "approval."
