Massachusetts District Jumps the Gun
North Brookfield School District wrote many home schooling families, requesting information state law does not require until the end of the school year.
The letter asked families to submit "updated standardized test information, portfolio type work samples, or other examples of work." However, under Massachusetts law, home schoolers are required to send in a year-end assessment to the school district rather than having to provide one at the beginning or middle of the school year.
Home School Legal Defense Association immediately wrote North Brookfield, explaining that they had no legal basis for their request and that we were advising our member families to wait until the end of the school year to submit their annual evaluations.
