Illinois School District Threatens Home School Family

School District 65 in Evanston recently threatened a Home School Legal Defense Association member family with truancy if they did not register their private school.

Mr. and Mrs. W. were teaching their children at home in accordance with Illinois law, which views home schoolers as private schools. Nothing in the law requires private schools to register, although they may do so if they choose.

When an intimidating letter came to Mr. and Mrs. W., insisting that they must register or face truancy charges, they immediately forwarded the letter to our office. We quickly responded, explaining state law to the district and defending our members' right to home school without the hassle of registering.

Mr. and Mrs. W. have not heard anything further from the district, and we expect that they will be left alone after this.
