| ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From the HSLDA@Capitol Hill E-lert Service... ----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,
On October 11, United States President George W. Bush announced a new initiative encouraging school children to donate to America's Fund for Afghan Children. This is an effort to provide relief to the impoverished children of Afghanistan, many of whom are orphaned and/or malnourished. The president specifically suggested that schools could work to raise funds for these children and then send their donations to the White House.
Home School Legal Defense Association, in conjunction with Crosswalk.com's HomeSchool channel, is announcing a unified effort to assist the president in promoting good will and providing charity to the needy children of Afghanistan. To that end, we want to encourage home school families across the country to respond positively to Bush's request.
This is an ideal opportunity for the home schooling community to make a powerful statement regarding its willingness to help those in need and to support our nation in this very difficult time. To facilitate your response, we are proposing that American home school children desiring to make a donation enclose their contribution in an envelope marked "Attention: Afghan Children's Fund" and addressed to HSLDA, P.O. Box 3000, Purcellville, VA 20134-9000. We will then take all the envelopes we receive and present them to the White House.
Please make checks or money orders payable to "America's Fund for Afghan Children," and mail by November 2, 2001. Of course, if you would like to send your donation directly to the White House, please do so.
HSLDA appreciates our country's emphasis on reaching out to Afghan children, and we hope our members will welcome this opportunity to help those in need.
Please feel free to forward this e-mail to your home schooling friends.
Very truly yours,
Michael Smith, President
P.S. Remember, make all donations payable to "America's Fund for Afghan Children," NOT to HSLDA, as we will not open the envelopes but simply act as a conduit for those home school children and families who desire to answer the call of the president.
