PURCELLVILLE, VA Michael Farris, founder and president of the Home School Legal Defense Association, has been named as one of the most significant 100 Faces of a Century in education.
The list was published in the December 15 edition of Education Week, American education s newspaper of record. The paper said that in 1983, Farris founded an organization to defend home schooling parents in legal battles with state and local officials. The Home School Legal Defense Association has helped move such schooling out of the shadows and pushed states to codify parents right to teach their children themselves.
Some of the others on the list include Supreme Court Justices Thurgood Marshall and Earl Warren, U.S. Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and Harry S. Truman, and Jonas Salk, John Dewey, Booker T. Washington, W.E.B DuBois, Marva Collins, E.D. Hirsch, Jr.; Steven Jobs, Milton Friedman, and Christa McAuliffe.
