This weekend, the NFL will hold its annual college draft. Among those expected to be drafted is Jason Taylor, a 6-foot-5½-inch, 245 pound defensive end from the University of Akron. Jason will likely go in the first round and will be the first home school graduate to make it to the NFL.

After Jason won a starting position at the University of Akron his freshman year, his scholarship was revoked by the NCAA because he had been home schooled. Jason could not afford the tuition and it looked as if he wouldn’t be going to college. Home School Legal Defense Association learned of his problem and negotiated with the NCAA to get Jason’s scholarship back. Jason went on to a very successful college football career.

In 1993, he played outside linebacker and had 46 tackles. In 1994, he started nine games as linebacker, had 70 tackles and led the team in sacks with six. In 1995, he had a team-leading 99 tackles, 11 for losses, and five sacks. Last season Taylor’s best game came in a 21-18 loss to Virginia Tech. He had 12 tackles, two quarterback sacks, two fumble recoveries and a special teams tackle for a safety. He was the only MAC player selected for the Blue-Gray All-Star Classic and for the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., where he was named the Defensive MVP.
