What do HSLDA and the ACLU have in common? Usually not a lot. However, both HSLDA and the ACLU are standing shoulder to shoulder against proposed regulations by the IRS that would prohibit 501(c)(4) organizations like HSLDA from telling you, American citizens, about what our elected officials are doing.

We previously wrote about these proposed regulations, and how you can submit a public comment for yourself in opposition to the proposed regulations. You can read the letter that HSLDA sent to the IRS opposing the proposed regulations, and you can read the ACLU’s letter to the IRS.

In addition, HSLDA Senior Counsel Jim Mason has been asked to testify against the proposed regulations before the House Subcommittee on Economic Growth, Job Creation, and Regulatory Affairs chaired by Representative Jim Jordan (OH). The hearing will be held on Thursday, February 27, at 9:30 a.m. EST. You will be able to watch the hearings live on CSPAN, or on their webpage. You can see the members of this subcommittee listed here.

Action Requested

Please call your U.S. representative and ask him or her to take action to stop the proposed regulations by the IRS.

You can reach your representative at the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121, or use HSLDA’s Legislative Toolbox to find your representative’s contact information. There is no need to identify yourself as a homeschooler. Your message can be as simple as the following:

“I urge you to protect free speech from being trampled by the IRS. This proposed regulation violates the First Amendment’s Free Speech Clause. It silences ordinary Americans who join a 501(c)(4) organization in order to join with other Americans in a common cause. It makes it harder for ordinary Americans to find out what their government is doing at the local, state, and federal level. Please do whatever you can to stop these proposed regulations from the IRS.”

Thank you for standing with us to preserve the First Amendment and the ability of the citizens to hold their government accountable by joining organizations which share their values. Since HSLDA was founded in 1983, we have fought for our members and the homeschool community by ensuring that elected officials leave homeschool freedom alone. We have also fought for free speech, so that American citizens can hold their government accountable. We will not rest until this proposed IRS regulation is defeated, either by the IRS withdrawing it, through congressional action, or in the courts.
