J. Michael Smith, Esq.
President

Michael P. Farris, Esq.
Chairman

Mike Farris to Speak at World Congress of Families

July 7, 2009

On August 10–12 thousands of pro-family delegates from 75 organizations around the world will be gathering in Amsterdam for the World Congress of Families V. The theme of the conference is “The Family: More Than The Sum of Its Parts.” The purpose is to discuss positive solutions to societal problems and show that the natural family is the best way to nurture children and essential for the functioning of a thriving society.

Chairman of HSLDA, Mike Farris, will participate on a panel and present on the subject, “The Right of Parents in School and Homeschooling.” Dr. Farris is one of the world’s leading experts in this field.

The World Congress of Families is meeting in Amsterdam because the Netherlands is ground zero in Europe for the discussion of family and population questions.

Recently, trends in Europe have been away from the natural family and while anti-family views have appeared in various forms, HSLDA is particularly concerned with the trend against homeschool freedom in Europe. Examples include the German government, which routinely fines and imprisons homeschoolers; Sweden, which is suggesting that homeschooling should be disallowed for religious or philosophical reasons; and Britain, where the government just accepted a report, based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which would empower the government to interview homeschooled children without their parents, choose the curriculum, and conduct home visits.

The World Congress of Families is an important group where leading experts from around the world can boldly articulate solutions to the world’s most pressing social problems.

In addition to many global family experts, Dutch premier Jan Peter Balkenende is anticipated to attend, as well as Dutch Minister of Youth and Family André Rouvoet.

Space is limited, but if you would like to attend please visit www.worldcongress.org to register.
