WITHHOLDING TV EQUALS CHILD ABUSE

Purcellville, Va.—A homeschooling family in Pensacola, Florida was shocked to be accused of child abuse for allegedly restricting access to the T.V.

“Social services really crossed the line on this one. Monitoring TV habits is responsible parenting—not child abuse,“ said Chris Klicka, Senior Counsel for Home School Legal Defense Association.

Countless homeschooling families are victims of malicious anonymous tipsters who routinely harass families every year. Contact with social services is demanding and stressful. Hundreds of homeschooling families are needlessly victimized as social services departments across the country pursue these types of allegations.

HSLDA intervened and explained the application of the Fourth Amendment. The social worker has not contacted the family further.

“Thankfully, common sense prevailed, but these types of situations occur regularly. Social workers must show some restraint or more families will be harmed by their overzealous actions,” said Klicka.

Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) is a 22-year-old, 80,000 member non-profit organization and the preeminent national association advocating the legal right of parents to homeschool their children.
