With weight-related health issues soaring in the U.S., there’s never been a better time to help your children enjoy getting out and being active. MaryAnn Gaver suggests how to fit that into your homeschool schedule, today on Home School Heartbeat, with HSLDA President Mike Smith.

Mike Smith:
MaryAnn Gaver, mother of twin boys and a regular columnist for the Home School Court Report, is with us again today. MaryAnn, homeschoolers often don’t have the benefit of an organized PE program. So how can parents be proactive in encouraging their children to be physically active?

MaryAnn Gaver:
Well, I think that parents can encourage their children to be active by being active with them. Walking and going to the park are great options for those with younger children. Some families find that hiking is a great way to exercise and do some exploring at the same time I believe the main thing to realize is that kids need to be physical as they’re growing and developing coordination and confidence.

So our job is to provide lots of time for our children to get fresh air, sunshine, and physical activity. Bike riding, swinging on the swing set, playing catch, and romping in the yard are activities that almost all children enjoy. And when they’re old enough, doing sports can also be a very positive thing and have some great benefits. So I encourage parents to get outside with your family, and have some fun playing and enjoying healthy recreation.

Mike:
MaryAnn, that’s great advice. Thanks for joining us today! And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
