“How can I provide the best education for my struggling learner?” The answer can come from a variety of places. Nita, a homeschooling mom, joins Mike Farris today on Home School Heartbeat, to share how the Home School Foundation made a difference for her family.

Mike Farris:
Nita, your family received a grant from the Home School Foundation’s Special Needs Children’s Fund. What was the impact on your son’s academics?

Nita: Well, when our son was initially diagnosed, we tested his IQ and then we compared that to his performance in 15 different areas, because if he was simply an average IQ performing average work, then it wouldn’t be any problem. But his test showed that in 15 areas, he was performing with a huge deficit in 10 of those areas. That was three years ago, and we just recently retested him. He’s now performing at his appropriate level in 11 of the 15 areas. So more importantly, he’s reading and that’s everything to us because it just gives me immeasurable joy to see my son in his leisure time reading classics by his own initiative, reading his Bible. I mean there was a day when I seriously wondered if we would ever get past Frog and Toad.

Mike:
Your son’s 13 now. Does he have any idea what he wants to do?

Nita:
Yeah, he wants to go into the educational therapy world. He’s already volunteering as a reading helper for the younger kids who are struggling. He just has such a heart of compassion for other kids who are in similar situations as he is.

Mike:
What a great story. Thanks so much for joining me. It’s been a pleasure to hear your son’s success. I’m Mike Farris.
