History We Love to Learn
Volume 98, Program 26

After millennia chock full of people and events, there’s a lot of history to learn! Does your student find history fascinating? Or simply confusing? This week on Home School Heartbeat, Diana Waring joins HSLDA President Mike Smith to help you teach history in a way your student will love to learn it.

Mike Smith:
This week, I’m pleased to have author and former homeschooling mom Diana Waring on the program. Diana, thanks for joining us today!

Diana Waring:
Well, Mike, I’m delighted to be here with you! Thanks for asking me.

Mike:
Diana, your passion is teaching history that students can get excited about. Why do you think some students perceive history as boring or confusing?

Diana:
You know, Mike, I think today most people have been taught history in a way that reduces it to a large collection of trivia. You know, mere names, dates, and places that you memorize, dump on a test, and promptly forget. It’s easy to be bored, and it’s normal to get confused with that approach.

And then there’s the huge portion of students that don’t enjoy sitting at a desk reading a book, who struggle to learn when a course is presented without any opportunities for moving or being creative. When history is studied in a lifeless way, it has no real meaning or relevance to their lives. It’s just one of those things they have to check off in order to graduate.

My passion is to reconnect the reality and adventure of history in a way that’s meaningful, relevant, even life changing for students.

Mike:
Diana, thanks for joining us today! I think this program could inspire homeschool moms to help their students see history in a whole new way! And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
