If you've appreciated Rachael's insights this week, join her for a live webinar, July 20, with HSLDA's @home e-vents! Rachael will talk more about teaching your children to bless others, and she will answer your questions. Learn more or register at the link above.

Have you ever heard someone say something nice—that he obviously didn’t mean? The way we communicate often says more than the words we use. Rachael Carman offers tips on teaching your children to communicate well, today on Home School Heartbeat, with HSLDA President Mike Smith.

Mike Smith:
Rachael, on our last two programs, you talked about the content of speech that blesses. Do you have any tips for the right way to speak to others?

Rachael Carman:
Oh, certainly. When I was growing up, Mike, I didn’t generally get in trouble as much for what I said, but for how I said it. So many times my mother would say, “Rachel, it’s your tone!” And that definitely has an impact on the words that we speak to each other. It’s just like in the Old Testament when God said, He didn’t want our sacrifices, He wanted our hearts. And very often, our kids can say the right things to each other in their words. But their heart’s not in it, and we can see it in their tone.

Other characteristics that can also be just as important are sincerity, joyfulness, and consistency. Our children need to hear words of blessing from each other often and repeatedly, so that we can reinforce the blessing we are trying to pass on.

Another thing we like to do at the Carman house to encourage each other is just to sing together. We have a lot of opportunities to do this through the day while we’re doing chores. And Scripture says it’s a great way to bless each other.

Mike:
Rachael, what a tremendous message for parents to impart to their children! Thanks for sharing that with our listeners this week! And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
