How often do you listen to what your children are saying to each other? The importance of their speech may be greater than you realize! Rachael Carman explains why, today on Home School Heartbeat, with HSLDA President Mike Smith.

Mike Smith:
This week, I’m pleased to have author, speaker, and homeschool mom Rachael Carman on the program. Rachael, thanks for joining us today!

Rachael Carman:
Thanks for having me today, Mike!

Mike:
Rachael, we’ve all heard the old saying about sticks and stones. So why do you, as a mom, believe it's so important to listen to what your children are saying to each other?

Rachael:
It’s an excellent question, Mike, and I really believe there are basically two reasons. One is found in James 3:10, where it says, “My brothers, blessing and curse should not proceed from the same mouth.” I think it’s so important to see how our children are talking to each other, because it shouldn’t come blessing and cursing from the same source. Because if you go even back further in scripture to Matthew 12:34, it says that out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.

When I take the time to listen to how my children are speaking to each other, I can start to get an understanding of what's going on in their heart. And if their heart is where it needs to be, then I’m going to hear blessings come out of their mouth. But if what I’m hearing coming out of their mouth are negative things, then I need to take the time to investigate and go a little deeper with that child and see what’s going on in their heart. Because that’s what I’m really aiming for.

Mike:
Rachael, that’s so helpful. Thanks for joining us today with these good words of wisdom! And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
