Some critics say that a Parental Rights Amendment to the Constitution is the wrong way to go about protecting the God-given rights of parents. Today on Home School Heartbeat, Mike Farris explains why this just isn’t so.

Mike Farris:
Let me start with a little history. The first words of the Constitution say “We the People” as the power behind the document. That’s the literal truth: the delegates that met in states to ratify the constitution were directly elected by the people of the United States.

The Constitution and its Amendments were created, not by the regular process of making the law, but by a two-thirds majority in each house, not just a simple majority that’s used in regular legislation. And the Constitutional amendments are not sent to the president—he has no role—but they’re sent to the states for final approval.

When congress drafted the Bill of Rights, they were acting to fulfill the mandate of the Declaration of Independence, which says, &;ldquo;to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men.” They secured our God-given rights by requiring that government recognize, respect, and protect these rights.

Those who argue the Parental Rights Amendment is unnecessary would have to also argue that the First Amendment is unnecessary because both the First Amendment and the Parental Rights Amendment protect God-given, inalienable rights. And all these rights deserve a place of protection in the Constitution of the United States. I’m Mike Farris.
