Have you ever wished that someone—perhaps one of those perfect parents you see from a distance—would share the formula for raising children? Today on Home School Heartbeat, host Mike Farris distills an insight from his 35 years of parenting.

Mike Farris:
I went to a seminar on Christian living when my firstborn child a week old. It had a great and positive influence on our parenting.

The speaker offered three steps for this and four steps for that. There were a whole variety of formulas that were presented. Some of these presentations were excellent. But the effect on me was a temptation to believe that there was a formula for everything in our walk with God—and especially in parenting.

That is what I was thinking in 1975. I don’t think that way today.

The Bible gives us some black and white standards that we should strive to never violate. Teach your children to love God. Don’t lie to your wife.

But the Bible is no mere set of fixed steps of action or a bunch of formulas. God used the verse in Ephesians 5:11 to lead me to Gonzaga Law School. I receive directions from God that were unique to me and to my family. Likewise, parenting is a dynamic process where there are more moving parts and free wills than any formula can possibly account for.

And not only does God give us His living, breathing Word—He gives us the Holy Spirit, our guide for all of the decisions of our life—including parenting decisions. Listen to the Spirit of God when He whispers in your heart, and talk about this process to your children so that they can learn to listen to the Spirit of God.

I’m Mike Farris.
