Want your student’s summer to be both fun and educational? Generation Joshua’s summer camp is a great opportunity to learn about civics—and become president! Hear more, today on Home School Heartbeat, with host Mike Farris.

Mike Farris:
Will Estrada, who’s director of HSLDA’s Generation Joshua, is with me this week. And we’re talking about a creative way to teach students about governmental processes. Will, tell us about it!

Will Estrada:
Mike, it’s called iGovern, our annual summer leadership camp. We have two this year, iGovern East on the campus of Patrick Henry College in Northern Virginia, and iGovern West, at Eagle Lake campground in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

These weeklong summer leadership camps combine all of the fun games and adventure of a regular summer camp along with high-pressure political role playing. Students participant in a presidential election campaign, including fundraising, debates, a primary, and a general election at the end of the camp. At the same time, our student legislature is in session, and students learn how to draft bills, debate them in committee, and then hold a final floor vote.

Our goal is to train young people about our nation’s political process and to show them that even a young person can make a difference. Who knows? Maybe a future President is going to attend one of our iGovern summer leadership camps this very year!

Mike:
Will, we’ll accept it if some of them only become the governor and members of the state legislature. That would be great, wouldn’t it?

Will:
It would be great!

Mike:
I’m Mike Farris.
