Your teenager acts like he might die if he can’t get online for a day. Ever wonder whether anything good happens on the internet? Today’s guest shares his own story to encourage you that, yes, Facebook could save lives! Learn more, on Home School Heartbeat, with host Mike Farris.
Mike Farris:
My guest today brings his own story of how social networking has proven to be a great tool for students who want to make a positive impact in the world. Joseph Alm is a homeschool graduate, a senior at Patrick Henry College, and the founder of a grassroots pro-life organization, called LifeRoots. Joseph, welcome to the program.
Joseph Alm:
Thanks for having me, Dr. Farris.
Mike:
Would you explain what LifeRoots is, and what you try to do?
Joseph:
Well, LifeRoots is a non-profit activist group for the pro-life cause. And what we do is we get together statistics—create educational materials about why people should be pro-life. And then we hand those out to people who normally wouldn’t get that kind of information—information about when a baby’s heartbeat is, or the threats to a mother that are inherent in abortion—that people often don’t hear. And we’ve met with a lot of success because of that.
Mike:
How did you use Facebook to promote this organization?
Joseph:
Well, one of the biggest problems with starting up one of these kinds of organizations is the organization in the beginning and the recruitment. And so Facebook helped me with that, just because we could start a group, we could contact all of our friends and get them all together, get them all organized, and get them going really quickly and efficiently. So ultimately, the social networking tool Facebook helped me start up the organization far quicker than I could have otherwise.
Mike:
Joseph, great story! Thanks so much for your activism and for telling it today. I’m Mike Farris.
