Field trips in the school year are like the chocolate chips in a cookie—they just make it worth eating! Today on Home School Heartbeat, HSLDA President Mike Smith is joined by his wife Elizabeth to remember some particularly sweet Smith family field trips.
Mike Smith:
Field trips can make learning come to life, and they can really bring a family together. Today, my wife Elizabeth will be sharing about our own family’s experiences. Elizabeth, would you share some of the favorite field trip memories you have?
Elizabeth Smith:
Well, sometimes I think we majored on field trips and we would take one of my favorites, was going out to used bookstores. About once a quarter, we had two used bookstores we would visit. We would go to one in the morning and spend a couple of hours there. And the kids could pick out reading of their choice, and then they had to mix a certain amount of educational-type material. And then we would go out to Taco Bell for lunch and then we’d go to the next used bookstore, and when the day was over they each had a grocery bag full of books to read.
And when they read their grocery bag full of books it was time to go again. It was a favorite for everyone. Part of my motive was to get them to love learning to enjoy learning and believe and know that books were valuable and something that we collect, something that we treasure.
Mike:
Thanks so much, Elizabeth. It’s always wonderful to have you here! And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
