“If you hold a cat by the tail, you learn things you cannot learn any other way,” said Mark Twain. Field trips are a little like holding a cat by the tail. On today’s Home School Heartbeat, HSLDA President Mike Smith is talking about how to help your student make the most of field trip opportunities. Mike Smith: A good time to debrief is on the drive home from a trip, or around the dinner table. It helps to use specific questions. Instead of asking Johnny to “tell Dad what he learned,” why not ask Johnny about his favorite part? That’s easier to answer. Have your students compare favorites and least favorites so they learn to reason logically. You might also ask your students about the most important thing they learned.
