Unforgettable Field Trips
Volume 96, Program 21
4/12/2010
Listen Now

Will your child remember the field trips you take 10 or 20 years from now? On today’s Home School Heartbeat, Mike Smith discusses choosing meaningful field trips. But first, a few homeschool graduates look back over the years with memories of their favorite field trips.

Natalie Glaser:
My all-time favorite field trip was going Camden, South Carolina for Revolutionary War days, with a battle reenactment there!

Will Glaser:
I liked paddling an Indian war canoe on Willamette River, going through the locks at the waterfalls.

Heather Terwilliger:
My favorite field trip was to Guide Dogs for the Blind, in San Rafael, California.

Mike Smith:
Leonardo Da Vinci supposedly said, “I can’t take them on a field trip, but I can take them to Rome.” If you’re looking for something closer than Rome, you could start with the usual places—museums, zoos, historical sites, and aquariums. But have you considered field trips inspired by one of your student’s subjects? Think about it! For science, you could visit farms, factories, science labs, hospitals, lumber mills, or treatment plants. For economics, try local businesses.

Asking friends and neighbors if you can visit their workplaces is a great and easy way to discover completely new destinations!

And don’t give up! If one idea won’t work, you can adapt it. If you can’t visit a hospital, why not visit a veterinarian’s clinic instead? If your state capitol is too far, visit a county council meeting or a legislator’s local office.

Keep in mind, field trips don’t have to be organized for large groups. Thirty people can’t fit in a police officer’s car for a ride along, but just you and your son could. Think of all the new things you might be able to do with a family-size group!

Thanks for listening today. And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
