As a homeschool dad, you may know you need to support your wife better—maybe she’s told you that in so many words! But the real challenge is where theory meets practice. Today on Home School Heartbeat, HSLDA attorney and homeschool dad Mike Donnelly joins HSLDA President Mike Smith to give some practical examples.

Mike Smith:
Today I’m joined by Mike Donnelly, a husband and a homeschool father of six. Mike, thank you for being with us today.

Mike Donnelly:
Good to be here Mike.

Mike Smith:
Homeschool moms face many responsibilities and challenges throughout the week. Can you share one or two practical examples of how you encourage and support your wife’s role in homeschooling your children, Mike?

Mike Donnelly:
Well, Mike, you know, homeschool moms need to get out to be with other moms from time to time, so I’m real careful to make sure that I’m home, to make sure that she’s able to go out to her monthly support group meetings and her mom’s night out. I also try to make sure she has the resources that she need to do her job, whether it’s a computer or a pencil sharpener. If she needs something, I make sure it’s a priority for me to help her get it.

One of the things I do, Mike, is the grocery shopping in our home. With the demands of being a homeschool mom, I figure one thing I can do to take some burden off of her is grocery shopping. So I do that at night time or on the weekends. Usually I bring one of my children with me. I also make sure to support her expectations of the children when they may be shirking or not performing as well, and that helps her from having to be a nag.

Mike Smith:

Mike, thank you for those very helpful suggestions for homeschool dads. Until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
