Is your student ready to pursue advanced placement courses? If you’re unsure, tune in to today’s Home School Heartbeat. Mike Farris joins HSLDA President Mike Smith to discuss what an AP course through the PHC Prep Academy requires from your student.

Mike Smith:
Mike Farris is with us again today to wrap up our discussion of the Patrick Henry College Prep Academy, the new college prep program that HSLDA and Patrick Henry College are working together to develop for homeschoolers. Mike, a lot of our listeners are probably wondering, is my student ready for this kind of course?

Mike Farris:
Well, first of all, normally the courses are going to be designed for juniors and seniors in high school. And so there’s an occasional sophomore and maybe even a freshmen who’s remarkably advanced who would be ready for it, but principally this is for juniors and seniors.

Then you would need to be in the top of, kind of the honor society level of, a public school. Which means, about half of the homeschool kids are at that level, because the 50th percentile of homeschoolers on exams are at the 85th percentile level, which is at the same level as normally would mean the honor society kind of work in a public high school. So there’s a whole lot of people that would be eligible for this and if your young person is an above-average homeschooler, they’ll be fine.

Mike Smith:
Mike, thank you for joining me this week to discuss the PHC Prep Academy! This project has an exciting future, and we at HSLDA are pleased to partner with PHC to make it possible. And until next time, I’m Mike Smith.
