Please note: This week’s program is a rerun that originally aired June 17, 2008.
When your teens pull out of the driveway, their driving safety is in their hands . . . or is it? On today’s Home School Heartbeat, HSLDA Senior Counsel Chris Klicka* explains that safety starts with a good driver’s education program.
Chris, what would you say to parents who fear that teaching their own children to drive will create tension when one or the other becomes frustrated with the process?
Well, I’d remind parents of the whole homeschooling process. Didn’t they have tension when they were teaching their children how to read, when they taught their children how to write, taught them to do math, and this sort of thing? You’re always going to have some tension, but I believe that the end result is worth whatever it takes to get there. And the goal needs to stay in the minds of the parents, and that is, they want their children to become safe drivers. And the way to do that is going to be to spend time, devote the attention, and make the sacrifice to ensure that the children are able to learn how to drive well.
That’s great advice, Chris. Thank you so much. Listeners, next time we’ll talk to Wayne Tully, who is an expert on parent-taught driver’s education. And until then, I’m Mike Smith.
